Trainee Train Driver

Summary of the role

We are currently looking for colleagues from within the business to join our team as a Trainee Driver. If successful in your application you would be required to undergo an intensive training course. At certain times within the training course there are assessments which you must pass.

Upon completing the training and assessments, as a Driver for Hull Trains, you'll be responsible for the safe and timely transportation of our customers. Your greatest strengths will lie in your ability to maintain concentration and remain alert at all times. On occasion, quick decision-making is required which the in-depth training will prepare you for. You will enjoy working in a structured environment, adhering to set rules and procedures.

Please be aware that due to health and safety commitments, applicants are required to live within a reasonable commuting distance of Hull Station (one hour maximum), or be willing to relocate in line with this commuting range, prior to commencing the role.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Report for duty in a fit and proper state to carry out safety critical duties in compliance with the Train Driving Licence and Certificate Regulations 2010
  • Respond to and deal with customer issues wherever possible
  • Prepare, drive and dispose of traction units safely, using the prescribed techniques as set out in the appropriate instructions
  • Report any safety related incidents and delays as necessary
  • Comply with the requirements of company instructions and the industry Rule Book
  • Undergo training and assessment on a continuous basis
  • Maintain currency of route and traction knowledge specific to the role of Mainline Driver and notify your manager immediately of any deficiency/refresher requirements
  • Only drive traction units that you have been trained to drive and only drive over routes that you can demonstrate sound knowledge of
  • Locate, and where possible rectify faults following the correct procedure
  • Sign for and read all notices and amendments affecting your duties and maintain currency of all personal publications
  • Wear all uniform and PPE provided and carry publications and authorities whilst on duty
  • Communicate effectively with, and assist other staff and customers in the interests of safety or customer service
  • Take part in all briefings, safety updates and training on company issues

About you:

  • You will be at least 20 years of age.
  • You will have completed at least 9 years education (primary and secondary).
  • You will require to pass the psychometric assessment conducted by a Recognised Psychological Practitioner.
  • You will be required to pass the relevant Medical conducted by a Recognised Doctor.
  • You will be able to understand (both listening and reading) and communicate (both speaking and writing) in English according to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) established by the Council of Europe.
  • You will be legally entitled to work in the UK
  • You will have a positive attitude towards continuous learning
  • You will have demonstrated a positive attitude towards customers and colleagues in your current role
  • You will have good communication and motivational skills to engage with and assist all colleagues and customers at all times
  • You will be able to successfully complete the intensive training course and assessments
  • An energetic and enthusiastic approach to problem solving and teamwork is required
