HR Management Trainee

Who you are

You're passionate about Employee Relations & Human Resources. You have strong attention to detail and enjoy designing and presenting effective communications. You enjoy working as part of a team and have a flair for analysing data. You're confident presenting your ideas to others using your first-class communication skills.  

The Scheme

On our flexible programme, along with your primary focus being Employee Relations you'll spend time in several teams within the HR department, Recruitment, HR Services, HR Business Partnering, Learning & Development, Employee Wellbeing and Engagement and Reward.  Our work affects the whole organisation, meaning you'll be partnering with colleagues across all our business functions; this could include Operations, Engineering, Customer Experience, Major Projects, Finance, and Procurement.  This means you will learn about the business first hand enabling you build a wide network of contacts.

You can expect to experience a variety of roles across the department, typical responsibilities include supporting managers by advising in matters involving local Trade Union representatives and local collective issues, preparing, and delivering internal presentations and reports, managing sensitive information around pay, and facilitate effective collective bargaining.  Whether completing data analysis, provide business context to use business insights to improve organisational effectiveness, or taking a leading role in the delivery of a business change initiative, you'll always be facing new and exciting challenges. You may also get the chance to provide ER leadership to small project teams.

During your time you will have the opportunity to work towards a level 5 Apprenticeship as HR Consultant Partner.  You will have the option to undertake an HR specialism from the CIPD.

First year Accountabilities will include:

  • Spend time with each of the teams within the HR function to gain a thorough understanding of their part of the business.
  • Support the provision of sound advice and guidance to managers to ensure that they are informed of the business' ER plans, policies, procedures and practices.
  • Contribute to and support the delivery of the ER strategy.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with SWR managers, HR colleagues, trade union representatives and colleagues.
  • Work with the ER Manager/Head of ER to support the coordination and administration of ER programmes in a timely, accurate and consistent manner to help ensure that all employees are engaged in delivering SWR's business objectives.
  • Support the development of ER strategy to ensure accuracy and compliance as determined by the ER Manager/Head of ER, UK employment law and any other relevant legislation.

Where you'll be based

  • London – SBC with placements across the South Western Railway Network. Year two will be determined by the job you take up.
  • Not only that, you will also experience several placements on the scheme with a range of teams and functions and locations including Operations, Engineering, Customer Experience and Major Projects.

  • Ability to carry out research and data collection and provide basic technical skills and experience to a project
  • Has the ability to analyse data, prepare time-frames and documentation to support the negotiation/consultation process.
  • Can build trust by providing consistently informed thought through advice.
  • Knows how to gather data from a variety of sources, to inform credible conclusions with the use of presentations.
  • Highly effective written and presentation skills at all levels.
  • Pays attention to detail and ensures accuracy, monitors and can review documentation and identify ways to improve presentation.

Experience & Qualifications:

  • Educated to degree level having achieved a minimum of a 2:1. Degree can be for any subject or equivalent relevant practical work experience in the Railway industry.
  • Has previous experience in a customer service environment.
  • Experience of working as part of a team
  • Willingness to travel across the SWR network for training/work
  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing and orally
  • Experience of managing/leading others
  • General Business Awareness.
  • Word processing/basic administration skills.
  • Willingness to work shifts
